Zoning & development
As evidenced by the results of the last census, Glenmont—and the county at large—is growing and changing rapidly. To deal with this growth, the county has enacted some major changes to our zoning and housing codes and is currently weighing even more significant changes. Indeed, the county’s Planning Board has scrapped the entire zoning code and is writing a new one.
In March 2010, the county enacted a wide-ranging set of commercial/residential (CR) zones. These zones include both businesses and housing (such as buildings with retail space on the first floor and apartments above). However, the buildings can also be entirely commercial or entirely residential.
These zones will be used in efforts to re-develop Glenmont--for example, to convert areas with apartments to mixed-use areas with both stores and apartments. These kinds of changes will affect everything from the number of people living in Glenmont to the kinds of stores we will have in the area to the types of infrastructure we will need to support our population.
Visioning Workshop 2012
The GGCA is working closely with the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission to find out what residents would like to see in a re-developed Glenmont. To gather feedback efficiently, the Commission and its urban-planning contractor, Rhodeside and Harwell, are organizing a Community Visioning Forum:
8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, February 4
Community visioning workshop
Saddlebrook Training Room/Park Police Headquarters
12751 Layhill Road, Silver Spring

All residents are invited to participate. The sector plan will guide how our area grows over the next few years; the mix of retail, residential, and office development we will have; and the kinds of infrastructure (roads, public facilities, etc.) that we will need.
Don’t miss this opportunity to make your voice heard on these vital issues!
